Intervista ai Born Cages, alternative rock band di New York

I Born Cages sono un gruppo rock alternativo di New York City. La band è stata formata dal frontman Vlad nel 2011. Da allora, hanno condiviso il palco con band quali JD Samson, Gold Fields, Har Mar Superstar, X Ambassadors, e Donald Cumming (dei The Virgins). Nel 2012, i Born Cages sono stari scelti per essere l’unica band di supporto in due spettacoli dei Guns N’Roses tenutisi il 19 febbraio e il 23 maggio 2012 a Chicago e nel Maryland. Il loro full-length album di debutto è uscito qualche settimana fa e da allora i Born Cages sono stati in tour con il Van’s Warped Tour. La band è composta da Vlad Holiday alla voce e chitarra, Matt Maroulakos al basso e tastiere, e Dave Tantao alla batteria.Vlad Holiday e Dave Tantao sono stai lieti di rilasciare a Zest questa breve intervista durante la loro sosta ad Orlando durante il tour.

Come avete scelto il nome Born Cages?

Vlad: Inizialmente avevamo un nome diverso, poi i testi delle nostre canzoni ci hanno fatto scegliere Born Cages perchè ogni giorno ci troviamo ad affrontare una lotta diversa.

Quando avete deciso di comporre “I’m Glad I’m Not Me” quale idea avevate in mente prima di registrarlo?

Dave: fin da subito sapevamo quale fosse il messaggio che volevamo l’album trasmettesse.

Vlad: Prima dell’album abbiamo fatto uscire un EP che conteneva alcune delle canzoni dell’album, ma abbiamo capito subito che mancava qualcosa, che il progetto a cui pensavamo era incompleto.

Dave: Sì, l’album è come se completasse la storia dell’EP.

Le  vostre canzoni nascono da esperienze personali?

Vlad: Sì, sono tutte personali.Uno dei miei songwriter preferiti è Bob Dylan, e mi piace tantissimo Springsteen. Molte delle loro canzoni sono molto personali e specifiche ma noi non facciamo lo stesso, e anzi molte delle nostre canzoni restano più sul generale. Non scriviamo testi perchè questi siano vendibili, ma nonostante questo molti ci dicono di rispecchiarsi nei nostri testi.

Come vi sentite quando vi dicono questo? 
Dave: E ‘ meraviglioso, davvero gratificante.

Raccontateci come nasce “I just want the truth, Baby”

Vlad: Ho pensato a quella canzone anni fa, ma è rimasta nel computer per quasi due anni fino a quando non abbiamo registrato l’album.
Quindi, avevi solo bisogno di prendere per un po’ le distanze da quel brano?

Vlad: Una lunga pausa e poi tutto è venuto tutto da sè. E ‘stato uno dei pochi brani che abbiamo autoprodotto e che sarà il nostro prossimo singolo, quindi è abbastanza eccitante.

Dave: Sì, e uscirà anche il video di quella canzone.

Quando uscirà?

Vlad: dovrebbe uscire presto.

Con chi speravate di andare in tour e ci siete riusciti?
Vlad: Con i Night Riots e i PVRIS

Quali nuove band vi piacciono?
Dave: Ho avuto modo di scoprire i Knuckle Puck che sembrano avere un ottimo effetto sui bambini e questa cosa mi piace molto.

E dopo il Warped Tour?

Vlad: Andremo in tour in autunno, sicuramente negli Stati Uniti, e forse oltre oceano.

Farete un tour per club o qualcosa di simile al Warped Tour?

Vlad: Sì, sicuramente un tour nei club, e non c’è niente di meglio! Sono davvero entusiasta.

Quanto è stancante suonare con questo caldo? 

Vlad: è estenuante. Voglio dire, io amo i festival all’aperto, sono divertenti, ma è un’atmosfera così diversa dai club.
Dave: ci sono persone che si alzano per fare un duro lavoro, noi invece suoniamo nel pomeriggio e davanti a tutti questi ragazzi. E’ stupendo!

Born Cages is an alternative rock band from New York City. The band was formed by front man Vlad Holiday in 2011. Since then, they’ve shared the stage with bands such as JD Samson, Gold Fields, Har Mar Superstar, X Ambassadors, and Donald Cumming (of The Virgins). In 2012, Born Cages were hand pick by Guns N’ Roses to be the sole support band on two sold out GNR club shows. They opened for Guns N’ Roses on February 19 & 23, 2012 in both Chicago and Maryland. Their full-length debut cd was released just a few weeks ago. Since then, Born Cages has been touring around with Van’s Warped Tour. Vlad Holiday and Dave Tantao were nice enough to sit down for a few quick questions during their Orlando stop on the tour.

The band consists of Vlad Holiday on vocals and guitar, Matt Maroulakos on bass and keyboards, and Dave Tantao on drums.

How did you come up with the name Born Cages?

Vlad: We were about a year into being a band and we actually had a different name and we came up with a long list of names that kind of meant something to us so, this one kind of did.  Our songs kind of revolve around that. The everyday struggles that we try to get over and embrace.

When you decided to make “I’m Glad I’m Not Me” did you have a vision in mind before recording it?

Dave: I think in the beginning there was a solid idea of the message we wanted to convey.

Vlad: We definitely worked on that. We had an EP beforehand that was just a few of the songs on the album, but it felt like an incomplete thought to us.
Dave: Yeah, the album kind of came from wanting to use that EP and create more of the same to add to it, to finish the story.

Do your songs come from personal experiences?

Vlad: Yeah, they are all personal. A lot of them are not very specific. One of my favorite songs writers is Bob Dylan, and I like Springsteen too. A lot of their songs are very specific, but we don’t really do that, they are more general. We don’t do it because we want it to be marketable or anything, but the truth is, we do have a lot of people coming up to us saying, I really relate to these lyrics.

How does that make you feel when they say that to you?

Dave: It is great. It is very rewarding.

Tell me the story behind “I just want the truth, Baby”

Vlad: I thought of that song years ago. Just kind of the drum beat or something and I couldn’t figure it out. I left it on my computer for like a year or two and came back to it until the record was done. It all just kind of came together very naturally.

So you had to take a bit of a break from it?

Vlad:  A long break and then it all came together. It was one of the only songs we self-produced on the record and it’s going to be our next single, so it’s pretty exciting.

Dave: Yeah, and look out for the video too.

When is that going to be coming out?

Vlad: Should be coming out soon.

Was there anyone you were looking forward to touring with?

Vlad: Yeah we have been hanging out a lot with Night Riots and PVRIS.

Are there any new bands that you like?

Dave: Yeah I got the chance to check out a band called Knuckle Puck. They seem to have a good effect on kids, and I like that.

What is next for the band after Warped Tour?

Vlad: We are going to be touring more in the fall. Potentially, might go over-seas in the very early fall, but I am sure we will be touring the US.

Will you be doing a more of a club tour or something more liked Warped Tour?

Vlad: Yeah for sure a club tour, nothing like this. I am so excited to start playing clubs again!

How grueling is this for you guys, performing out in this heat?

Vlad: It is grueling.  I mean, I love outdoor festivals. It’s fun, but it is such a different atmosphere.
Dave: But, if you look at the bigger picture, there are people that wake up and do hard work. We are still getting to play music in the middle of the day, getting to see all these kids. It’s just cool!
